If you are touring the North of Spain, I can recommend visiting Irún, a town in the border with France and very near San Sebastián (91km).

Irún is a city located in the province of Gipuzkoa, in the Basque Country, and it has approximately a population of 62.910 habitants. It is the second city most populated in Gipuzkoa after San Sebastián. It is located in front of the French city Hendaia. They are both separated from each other by a river.

Irún is the last city before crossing the border with France, and the nature and the landscape that surrounds this city is simply spectacular. By the town we can find the river Bidasoa.

This city was founded by the Romans where they found some iron mines. The town has a rich history full of wars and conquers by different kingdoms. It was in 1810 when the city got integrated in the Basque Region by Napoleón.

It does look like a new town, but it is in fact a town where you can see a lot of buildings from the past. One of them is the church of Santa María del Jucal, dating from the XVI century and built in a baroque style.

Another place that you need to visit in Irún is the town hall of the city, as well built in 1763 following the baroque style by the King Carlos III. In front of the town hall there is a monument, San Juan Harri which commemorates the independence of the city. The city centre is beautiful and magic, with many things to do.

Santa Helena’s Hermitage
Santa Helena Hermitage is a church that was built in the X century in the Basque Country. Also, there you can find the remains of an ancient Roman temple built in the I century, and also the remains of an indigenous necropolis.

Txingudi Bay
Irún is located by the Txingudi Bay. We recommend going for a walk along the Camino de la Bahía, which is around 14 km long. You can start this route at the Château d’Abbadie in Hendaya and finish at the lighthouse of Higuer in Hondarribia. This route borders rivers and beaches, and it crosses Irún city. It is a great way to enjoy the city and the views of this natural landscape.

San Marcial Balcony
This is a mount located by the city of Irún. This mountain is known by the locals as Saint Marcial; however, its official name is Monte Aldabe. It has a hermitage dedicated to Saint Marcial to commemorate the victory against the French in the battle of 20 June 1522. Here you can go to the top of the mountain and visit the Bidasoa Balcony. From the balcony and the hermitage, you will get a panoramic view of the city of Irún and the Bay of Txingudi.

Kayak or SUP Adventure on the Bidasoa River
For those who enjoy outdoor activities, one of the most thrilling ways to experience Irún’s natural beauty is by riving down the Bidasoa River in a kayak or on a stand-up paddleboard (SUP). This guided experience lets you immerse yourself in the stunning landscape of Gipuzkoa while navigating the gentle currents of the river that separates Spain and France. It’s a perfect activity for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.

Local Cuisine
We recommend that in your visit you enjoy the traditional Basque cuisine and try some of the local Pintxos, which is the equivalent of the Spanish “tapas”. Food is really good and exquisite in Irún.

Weather in Irún

Irún enjoys a mild oceanic climate throughout the year. Summers are warm but not too hot, with average highs around 24°C (75°F), while winters are cool and wet, with temperatures rarely falling below 6°C (43°F). It’s a good idea to bring a light rain jacket, as rainfall is common year-round.
