With the majestic Himalayas as a frame, this north-central region of Nepal was closed to visitors until 1992, but today it has become one of Nepal’s most exclusive trekking areas and, until a couple of years ago was only accessible on foot, by yak or pony train.
It was only opened up to motorized vehicles in 2010, but only a limited number of visitors are allowed each year, and to enter, you need a pre-paid permit.
The Gurung community largely settled in the areas leading up to Kagbeni, known as the lower Mustang, while the Lo Pas dwell in the area above Kagbeni, from Samar, which is distinguished as Upper Mustang. These people mainly practice Tibetan Buddhism, as evidenced by the tracks decorated with sacred mantras inscribed on Tibetan prayer flags.
